Dust settles—
layer upon layer, a quiet, unremarkable
presence.

	How can we experience the history of a site from a microbial perspective? How does a non-human archive look?

Dust settles—layer upon layer, a quiet, unremarkable presence.

But dust is not simply the residue of decay; it is alive, teem with microbial life, a material archive of entangled histories. The Materialised Temporality of Dust invites us to look closer, to see dust not as matter out of place, but as a repository of life—a complex mixture of organic and inorganic matter where the past and future converge in microbial form. Here, microbes do more than persist; they shape the world, recording the intricate interactions of life that have unfolded across time.

Through the lens of microbial life, participants are invited to re-experience the Royal College of Art’s Kensington Campus as it stood in the 1960s to present times. But this is not a human-centered history. It is a history told by dust, through the microbial lives that have flourished unnoticed, inhabiting spaces we call "ours."

	Immersive microbial perspectives The journey unfolds in four scenes:

	 &#60;img width="1692" height="1692" width_o="1692" height_o="1692" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bfe2f9f1da2ae00ffe4118e534113490c66f46c225202c4e0b7641c416d3bdb5/MiscBWShots_00006_2.jpg" data-mid="218251177" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bfe2f9f1da2ae00ffe4118e534113490c66f46c225202c4e0b7641c416d3bdb5/MiscBWShots_00006_2.jpg" /&#62;Past
We begin in the RCA library of the 1960s, where archival photographs reveal its original layout, untouched by the renovations of the 1980s. A voice-over guides the audience, urging them to see through the eyes of the dust microbiome. In the dust, memories linger, mapping a history beyond human notice.

&#60;img width="1664" height="1634" width_o="1664" height_o="1634" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8b78d305d13aa786696cabace4bfe083724f0c2c7c06f6b63aea61195a7df7bf/Screenshot-2024-09-05-at-18.46.19.png" data-mid="218251166" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8b78d305d13aa786696cabace4bfe083724f0c2c7c06f6b63aea61195a7df7bf/Screenshot-2024-09-05-at-18.46.19.png" /&#62;
Dormant
Darkness envelops the scene, and participants become dormant microbes—neither dead nor alive, but dormant. This is sporulation, a state of microbial stasis, where bacterial spores encase themselves in protective shells, capable of withstanding extreme conditions. Time is irrelevant; survival is the only measure, as these spores may revive after millions of years.

&#60;img width="1681" height="1678" width_o="1681" height_o="1678" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5b4a5a9a2e4a797b8f2617a3436274ede3897bdab7b042b24f36bb7eb61c1baa/2Screenshot-2024-09-05-at-18.39.01.png" data-mid="218251163" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5b4a5a9a2e4a797b8f2617a3436274ede3897bdab7b042b24f36bb7eb61c1baa/2Screenshot-2024-09-05-at-18.39.01.png" /&#62;Awakening
The scene bursts into vibrant life, as the dormant microbe awakens after 63 years, shifting scales, shapes, and forms. Though the library’s layout has transformed, the dust endures—linking past and present. In this microbial revival, participants witness the library as it was and as it is, all at once.

&#60;img width="1683" height="1644" width_o="1683" height_o="1644" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4a0f77e436c7cf80fe507d2526b74483c2d8dab79bdb0d14a37a3e4e90664717/Screenshot-2024-09-05-at-18.39.39.png" data-mid="218251162" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4a0f77e436c7cf80fe507d2526b74483c2d8dab79bdb0d14a37a3e4e90664717/Screenshot-2024-09-05-at-18.39.39.png" /&#62;PresentNow, the RCA library appears in its present form, yet participants are no longer the same. As microbes, they have passed through 45,990 generations, evolving and persisting with a life cycle that unfolds beyond human perception.

	The sonic ecologies of dust

How can we access the sonic ecologies of dust? This project asks, not with the expectation of a clear answer, but as an invitation to listen—to attune ourselves to the hidden vibrations of non-human life. Dust, often seen as inert, holds within it a cacophony of microbial activity, layers of time that speak in frequencies beyond human hearing. Through potential methods of dust sonification and sonic archives, the project explores what it means to hear dust, to translate its silent ecologies into sound.

As the layers of sound build, what emerges is a new kind of testimony. The sonic forms suggest an alternative history, one where dust carries the memory of its environment across decades, and sound offers a voice to the non-human agents that shape and share our world. Through these vibrations, we begin to access not just dust’s materiality, but its participation in the passage of time.

‘We are contaminated by our encounters; they change who we are as we make way for others. As contamination changes world-making projects, mutual worlds—and new directions—may emerge. Everyone carries a history of contamination; purity is not an option.’(Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, The Mushroom at the End of the World: On the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins)

	Contamination is collaboration From the human community, moss to mycelium, and the interconnecting micro-worlds. We are contaminating. We are collaborating, colliding, leaving our trace of self behind.
Traces&#38;nbsp; consisting&#38;nbsp; of&#38;nbsp; voice,&#38;nbsp; thought,&#38;nbsp; idea,&#38;nbsp; particle,&#38;nbsp; breath,&#38;nbsp; and&#38;nbsp; micro-organism.
How can we as beings become more consciously connected to the non-human,
and microbiomes at the foundation of our world’s ecologies?
 Is it possible to develop deeper relational understanding and care of our mutual contaminations
- through listening?
Sonic Contamination is a series of outcomes exploring the idea of contamination. Challenging our role and perceptions towards species existing on different scales of being and time. The collection attempts to bridge audiences empathetically to the intermingling microworlds around us, through forms of sound, touch, performance, workshop and story. Creating experiences resulting from listening and field recording living systems and environments.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>

‘Time are legion’
A profound reflection by Carlo Rovelli inspired my term time species, following the understanding that all beings exist on their own time and my pursuit in bridging to these different scales of being, sonically.

It was in the act of listening that I found a deeper level of transportation, realised during my pursuits of stillness. Specifically a moment in Scotland, listening to moss and then in the creation of a soundscape from microbe grown material.

These listening-led experiences allowed me to reveal a new conscious appreciation of the microscopic factories at work around us all, all the time, negotiating, invading, caring, as they move and contaminate continuously.

Sonic Contamination Workshop - Extended Listening

The workshop is designed around the ideas of
sonically bridging between human and the non-human. Inspired by Pauline
Oliveros’ deep listening Sonic Meditations,
and flow state (Mihály Csíkszentmihályi), the
workshop includes exercises in how we can
attempt to create states of conscious sonic
contamination through listening. Utilising
microphones that capture vibrational
responses, to create extended listening states.
Through extended listening methods and different ways to respond independently and collectively.&#38;nbsp;

TracesA contamination map formed of the sonic collaborations shared across different listening sites. Each individual listening is expressed as a unique trace, spreading and colliding with each other as an expression of the hidden microworld contaminations at work in the environments around us...
...Unseen and heard.

Contamination Performance Exercise

	From the workshop outcomes and chromatographic traces a performance piece manifestation was crafted, aiming to link all these elements together.
The chromatographic traces acts as a visual codification of the different species the work tries to directly engage and respond to, through listening.

The score follows three phases following an evolution of the sonic contamination workshop exercises, each moving towards the goal of collaborative polyphony.
Many voices existing in space and time, together.
Taking part in the performance were three human instrumentalists and one non-human, moss!

	Audiences are invited to touch, sit and lie down upon the sonic textile structure which resonates with field recordings of ecosystems, imperceivable to the human ear.
Across the textile, conductive threaded forms are embroidered. These are displayed in a rhizomatic formation and visitors are invited to sit, touch and listen. As each embroidered thread is touched, the tracked change in capacitance causes the sounds to evolve towards their visitor's touch. The reactive response, demonstrates the audience's traces becoming a part of the sonic ecosystem. The speaker drivers beneath the textile, are connected to each species audio, moss, mycelium, insect.
This gives a uniquely intimate, spatial and tactile response showing the sonic contaminations we create as we cross different beings in space and time.
Specifically, through touch and listening.
